The Unnamable (1988)

With a storm raging outside last night, I sat down to some dark horror on Netflix. My choice to end my evening was 1988s H.P. Lovecraft inspired The Unnamable.

Plot/ Back in the 1800's a lady gave birth to a monster. They decide that the baby is too ugly to name, therefore the monster is known as the "Unnamable". The creature brutally slaughters his family, and gets trapped in a vault. Go ahead to 1998, and some college students have heard the story about the unnamable and want to check out the vault.

Unlike many Lovecraft films that tend to take on their own life, loosely based in the horror maestro’s world, this film truly attempted to stay true to the original short story. Unfortunately, in the end it becomes just too cliché’ losing the mysterious and unnerving nature of the original classic. While it has its flaws like an uneven script, some bumpy acting and a lack of suspense, there are some very redeeming qualities that made me actually remember the film from my youth. The flick has a nice array of gore, good use of direction and a decent score (albeit there are instances where it doesn’t fit). In the end, it comes off as fairly entertaining and a good movie for stormy nights.
